I Gave Lingopie a Shot and Here’s How it Went: My Honest Review

I love to travel and I know many others are interested in seeing the world too. Enjoying new experiences, meeting new people, and trying new food make travel great.

I’ve spent a lot of time traveling through Latin America and what makes a trip 10x better is knowing the local language. That’s when I decided to try out Lingopie and write this review.

My favorite way to travel is slow. By that, I mean staying in one place or country for months at a time. This allows me to see how the locals live and to have deeper experiences.

There are multiple ways to learn a language, by either visually, audio, or with your typical flashcards.

I’ve met many foreign people on the road who said they learned English by watching movies and listening to music. So I thought, why not give that a try?

In this Lingopie review, I will go over what I like and don’t like about it, the features it offers, and if it’s worth trying out for yourself.

Lingopie is your one-stop shop to shows in your chosen language with tools to help you along the way. There are even Netflix shows from those countries in here for you to watch!

They also have audiobooks and podcasts if you’d rather listen to those. Learning a language takes a lot of practice, and this website tries to help make that process more enjoyable.

Is Lingopie Worth the Subscription?

My time using Lingopie was a breath of fresh air when trying to learn Spanish. I’ve mainly been using audio apps like Pimsleur as well as using an assortment of flash cards.

Having the ability to watch shows that are also on Netflix and Disney+ made the $13 per month price tag seem worth it.

It wasn’t until I started to get into its many other features that I truly found out how helpful a learning supplement it could be.

When watching shows, there will be a list of vocabulary that you will be quizzed on afterwards.

Along with different quizzes, flashcards, and games you can play, there are also free group lessons.

These lessons can cover different topics, like how to book a hotel with confidence.

If you’re looking for a different way to learn another language or simply want something more enjoyable, I’d suggest giving Lingopie a try!

Currently, there are 10 languages that you can switch between when using Lingopie.

I stuck with Spanish as I have been learning this language throughout my travels recently to places like Argentina, Peru, and other Latin American countries.

The Best Tools on Lingopie to Learn a New Language

What makes Lingopie a great resource for your language learning adventure is the different tools that accompany and supplement the shows, movies, audiobooks, and podcasts.

Different Levels

Using a service like Lingopie is great for all levels because hearing Spanish spoken out loud more consistently is always beneficial.

While saying that, I think you’ll get the most out of it when at an intermediate level or beyond. The great thing is that you can search the catalog of content by difficulty levels.

When searching for a movie or show you want to watch, you can filter by basic, moderate, and expert.

This helps to make the process of starting your language learning less daunting, as too much content can be overwhelming.

Multiple Shows to Choose From

As you can see in the picture above, they have shows from Netflix and Disney+. This is incredible because choosing popular shows helped keep me engaged.

It’s also great to know what shows are popular in the country you may be visiting, as this could be a great talking point.

There are multiple shows to choose from and it’ll be very difficult to run out of shows that you’ll find interesting.

Offers Live Classes

A unique feature that I just started using is joining a live class. These classes are either in groups or private lessons.

The group lessons cover a wide range of topics such as:

• Kitchen & cooking
• How to book a hotel with confidence
• Ordering meals at local restaurants
• Goal planning

The teachers are fantastic, and it’s a great tool to use that’s included in your monthly subscription.

If you want more of a 1 on 1 lesson, then you should check out the private lessons. I haven’t done any here yet, but you can purchase four lessons for $80 per month.

This comes out to be $20 per lesson, which is a fair price considering the quality of the teachers.

Flashcards Post-Show

What I loved about watching shows on Lingopie in Spanish is that I immediately got quizzed on vocab from that lesson.

Those vocab words were then added to a flashcard bank that I could go back to and review whenever I wanted to.

Seeing both the English and Spanish captions helped improve my listening. What I liked to do was first watch an episode, only listening/reading the Spanish captions.

I would then re-watch the show and try to listen and understand things that I might have missed previously.

This helped me tremendously in being able to pick up words during a conversation and understand the use of it.

Lingopie also uses a strategy that tests your words at a certain pace, which will help with long-term memory.

What I Didn’t Like About Lingopie

To be completely honest, there wasn’t much that I didn’t like about Lingopie. It offers a lot of content, great tools, and is competitively priced.

They don’t offer much of an onboarding to figure out what level you are at. This is fine if you’re using it alongside other learning tactics.

While I still suggest this to beginners, it shouldn’t be your only source of your target language as a beginner.

It’s fantastic as an intermediate learner if you’re looking for more immersion or passive learning.

What I would like to see is more of an onboarding process that puts you into either a beginner, intermediate, or expert category.

Showing the best steps to take after this would help not only beginners but also anyone else who joins.

My Strategy When Using Lingopie

I don’t suggest only using Lingopie to learn a new language. Using a combination of flashcards, audio lessons, and private lessons is the best language learning strategy.

I’d suggest using flashcards, Pimsleur, & iTalki as other supplemental learning tactics. Other companies out there are similar to Lingopie, but in my opinion, are not as good.

To start my day, I usually use Pimsleur and flashcards. When I’m looking for something to watch or have extra time, I turn to Lingopie.

When learning new words from podcasts, TV shows, music, or anything else, it’s important to go over that material as soon as possible.

Lingopie takes those words you just learned and immediately quizzes you. Something that can be beneficial for mastering words.

I never run out of shows to watch on the platform either. Their large selection of shows & movies is what sets them apart from others.

These are popular shows available in those select countries. This makes the content more enjoyable to watch, in my opinion, too.

FAQs

Is Lingopie Good for Absolute Beginners?

Lingopie is not the best platform for absolute beginners. You should use it along with other apps/learning strategies.

They don’t go over much grammar structure and it’s better used as a tool for extra learning than your main source of information.

With that being said, it’s very possible to watch a lot of Spanish content through the shows they offer and live lessons, and learn a ton.

Can I Really Become Fluent Using Only Lingopie?

It’s possible to become fluent only using Lingopie but you’d have to watch a lot of content every day for this to happen.

It’s best used as a supplemental learning tool to other things like flash cards, classes and talking 1 on 1.

How is Lingopie Different From Watching Netflix with Subtitles?

Lingopie shows both Spanish AND English Subtitles. This is better than only English subtitles because you can see the word and how the sentence is structured.

On top of that, a list of vocab from the shows will be added to a word bank. This word bank can be accessed at any time through flashcards and other games.

Watching a Spanish show on Netflix with English subtitles can still be a great way to learn the language but Lingopie offers more ways to learn during and after the show.

What’s also great about watching shows on Lingopie is that you can pause them and analyze the sentence using their AI tools.

Can I Use Lingopie on my Smart TV?

Yes, you can connect Lingopie to your smart TV. They have an app that can be downloaded on multiple devices such as Roku, IOS mobile, Android, and Google TV.

This is amazing as it allows you to watch on the go or in a comfortable setting that will allow you to watch as much as possible.

Can Lingopie Help with Regional Dialects or Slang?

Absolutely! You can watch shows that are created by that specific country and put on their Netflix. Depending on what show you watch, you’ll find yourself hearing some slang.

It might be difficult to spot sometimes but once you start to watch multiple shows from different Spanish speaking countries for instance, you’ll start to notice different terms.

My Final Thoughts

I enjoyed writing this review a lot because Lingopie was a lot better than I was expecting. Simply put, it offers so much more than its competitors and there are many ways to learn.

It might seem counterintuitive to pay for Netflix and this at the same time, but I can assure you that trying to learn on Netflix only is not the same.

If you create a structured plan with vocab practice, 1 on 1 lessons or in groups, and add in watching these shows, you’ll be well on your way to learning a new language!

Using the free lessons to your advantage makes the monthly cost of $13.99 more than worth it in my honest opinion! Give it a try before your next travel adventure.
